What the Price Covers

The $155 covers the vehicle and guide only. Meals, the fox village admission and the Ginzan winter shuttle are paid on top, so budget for them before you book.

Included and Not Included

The listing includes the vehicle for the whole 10-hour itinerary, fuel, tolls and motorway charges, and professional guide service. Infants aged 0-2 join free on an adult's lap with advance notice.

Paid on top: breakfast, lunch and dinner, Zao Fox Village admission of $9.54 (¥1,500) per person, free for children of primary school age and younger, and the Ginzan Onsen shuttle bus fee if required, with a reference price of $6.36 (¥1,000) in winter and $3.18 (¥500) in other seasons. Luggage service, optional activities, personal expenses and optional driver-guide tips are also excluded.

One caution. The listing's inclusion text names the $9.54 (¥1,500) fox admission inside a block that also lists excluded items, and the separate notes state plainly that this admission is not included. The notes and the price breakdown agree it is an extra. Confirm the exact charges on the booking page before paying.

Book It If, Skip It If

Book it if

  • you want the foxes and Ginzan Onsen plus a shrine stop in one 10-hour day for $155, discounted from $310
  • you want a guide in Chinese, English or Japanese and hotel pickup in Sendai on some options
  • you travel with an infant aged 0-2, who joins free on a lap with advance notice

Skip it if

  • you want a longer fox visit, since this tour gives only 1 hour while the Fox Village and Ginzan Onsen with Hotel Pickup gives 100 minutes
  • your date falls on a Wednesday, when the fox village is closed except in the May holiday period and Obon
  • you use an electric wheelchair, which is not allowed, or you are over 95 years

Pros and Cons

An honest read of what this listing does well and where it falls short.

What we genuinely like

  • Two headline stops in one day: 1 hour at Zao Fox Village and 1.5 hours at Ginzan Onsen, with no car needed.
  • Hotel pickup from Sendai is offered on some options, and the tour runs year-round.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead, with reserve now and pay later.

The honest downsides

  • The fox admission of $9.54 (¥1,500) and any Ginzan winter shuttle fee are extra, on top of $155.
  • Only 1 hour at the foxes. A rival tour on the same route gives 100 minutes.
  • No reviews yet and no rating, so the listing has no track record.
  • The coach guide may rely on a translation device, and the tour can be cancelled if fewer than 4 people book.

Who it's NOT for: If you want the foxes to be the whole focus of your day, book the Fox Village and Ginzan Onsen with Hotel Pickup instead, which gives 100 minutes at the village.

Before You Go

The day runs in every season, but winter changes two things: snow at Ginzan Onsen and a possible shuttle fee. Cash matters at the fox village.

Season and Winter Changes

The tour runs year-round. In winter Ginzan Onsen becomes snow-covered, and the town's car restriction runs from 19 December to 7 March, with the period extendable if snowfall requires. The tour's own reference for the shuttle fee is $6.36 (¥1,000) in winter and $3.18 (¥500) in other seasons.

Each season changes the look of the town, with snow-covered rooftops in winter and warm colours in autumn.

Money and Lunch

Bring cash. Zao Fox Village admission is paid on top, and the listing names cash in its what-to-bring list. Lunch is not included.

The optional 50-minute stop in Shiroishi is at your own expense, so carry enough for a bowl of Umen noodles and drinks.

Meeting Point and Timing

Meet at Sendai Station East Exit, across from the sightseeing bus parking lot, in front of Lotteria, or arrange a Sendai hotel pickup if the option is offered on your date. Starting times appear when you select a date. Do not book a same-day flight or Shinkansen after the tour, because traffic can delay the 100-minute return drive.

What to Bring and Wear

Bring comfortable shoes, comfortable clothes and cash. There is walking at Kanahebisui Shrine and Zao Fox Village, and Ginzan Onsen is a riverside street. In winter expect snow underfoot in the onsen town, so shoes with grip are wise.

Keep a respectful distance from the foxes. In the vehicle, smoking, alcohol, drugs, food and drinks are not allowed.

Age and Accessibility

No minimum age is stated. The tour is not suitable for people over 95 years. Electric wheelchairs are not allowed.

No other wheelchair information is stated, so ask the operator through the booking page if you use one. Infants aged 0-2 join free on an adult's lap with advance notice.

How the Tour Runs

The day starts at Sendai Station East Exit or your Sendai hotel, then runs clockwise through the shrine, the foxes, lunch and the onsen town before the 100-minute drive back.

Meeting Point and Route

You meet at Sendai Station East Exit, across from the sightseeing bus parking lot, in front of Lotteria, or take a Sendai hotel pickup where the option exists. Starting times are shown on the booking page and no fixed clock times are printed for the stops.

The drive out takes 1.5 hours. First stop is Kanahebisui Shrine for 1 hour of free time and photos. Next is Zao Fox Village for 1 hour among the foxes. Then comes an optional 50-minute lunch break at a local restaurant in Shiroishi, home of Shiroishi Umen noodles, at your own expense. The last stop is Ginzan Onsen for 1.5 hours of self-guided time along the riverside street. The return drive to Sendai takes 100 minutes.

Two practical warnings from the operator. The coach guide may rely on a translation device because of the international mix of travellers. And traffic can delay the return, so avoid same-day flights or Shinkansen connections.

Fox Village Rules, Hours and Entry

The village sets its own hours, fees and rules, and they shape what you can do in the 1-hour stop.

Hours and the Wednesday Closure

Admission is $9.54 (¥1,500) for junior high school age and up. Elementary school children and younger enter free, but limits apply to how many children one adult may bring. Summer hours are 9:00-16:30 with last entry at 16:00. Winter hours from 15 October are 9:00-16:00 with last entry at 15:30, and may be shortened in bad weather.

The village closes on Wednesdays, except during the May holiday period and Obon, when it opens. Check your tour date against that rule before booking, because a Wednesday departure cannot include the foxes as planned.

Rules Inside the Village

Pets and strollers are not allowed in the village. Baby carriers are recommended. Limits apply to how many children one adult may bring. Wheelchairs and walking aids are restricted in the free-roaming area.

Visitors must not touch the foxes because they may bite, may feed them only in the designated feeding area, and must not sit or crouch at eye level. Keep a respectful distance, as the tour's own walking note also says.

Is 1 Hour Enough?

One hour covers the free-roaming garden, the feeding area and photos at a steady pace. It does not leave slack for queues at the entrance or a slow walk back to the bus. If the foxes are the main reason for your trip, compare this tour with the Fox Village and Ginzan Onsen with Hotel Pickup, which gives 100 minutes at the village on the same route.

The Places on This Day Trip

Four stops, three of them walks you do at your own pace. The fees and seasonal rules below come from the official bodies that run each place.

Kanahebisui Shrine

A 1-hour photo and free-time stop early in the day. You walk the shrine grounds at your own pace. No shrine entry fee is listed for this tour.

The same shrine appears on the Ginzan Onsen and Tohoku Highlights Tour and the Zao Snow Monsters Night Cruiser Tour.

Zao Fox Village

1 hour to walk designated areas where more than 100 foxes roam, including red foxes and silver foxes. Admission of $9.54 (¥1,500) for junior high age and up is paid on top, free for primary school age and younger. Summer hours are 9:00-16:30, last entry 16:00.

Winter hours from 15 October are 9:00-16:00, last entry 15:30. Closed Wednesdays except in the May holiday period and Obon.

Shiroishi Lunch Stop

An optional 50-minute break at a local restaurant in Shiroishi, at your own expense. Shiroishi Umen is a wheat noodle dish with a history of about 400 years. On the Ginzan Onsen and Tohoku Highlights Tour a Shiroishi Umen Gozen lunch is included in the fare instead.

Ginzan Onsen

1.5 hours of self-guided time in the onsen town in Yamagata Prefecture. Walk the riverside street under gas lamps, cross the photogenic bridges and browse souvenir shops. The free Warashiyu foot bath in the centre of the street is open 6:00-22:00 year-round. Shirogane-yu public bath costs $3.18 (¥500) for adults and $1.27 (¥200) for children.

In winter the town runs a car restriction. From 19 December 2026 to 7 March 2027 day visitors park at Taisho Roman-kan and ride a reserved shuttle, with round-trip fares of $6.36 (¥1,000) for 9:00-11:00 departures, $4.45 (¥700) for 11:00-14:00 and $7.63 (¥1,200) for 14:00-18:00 booked in advance. The tour lists this shuttle fee as an extra if required.

Doing It on Your Own by Train

Zao Fox Village has no train station of its own. The Shinkansen takes about 13 minutes from Sendai to Shiroishi-Zao, then the village is about 20 minutes by car. A seasonal Shiroishi Zao Sanroku loop bus serves the village from Shiroishi-Zao Station, Shiroishi Station, Kamasaki Onsen and Yajiro Kokeshi Village, but the village site says it runs daily except Wednesdays from October. Village staff will arrange a taxi for the return trip.

Ginzan Onsen is harder. It needs Yamagata, then Oishida, then a local bus, and from 19 December to 7 March day visitors can reach the town only on the reserved shuttle from Taisho Roman-kan. The Okama crater road is closed by snow from early November to late April, so it is not an add-on here.

So a self-guided fox village day is possible on a weekday outside the bus gap, but combining the village and Ginzan Onsen in one day without a car is the reason to book a tour. If you only want the onsen town, the Naruko Gorge and Ginzan Onsen Bus Tour includes the shuttle fare from Taisho Roman-kan. If you want Ginzan plus lunch and the shuttle covered, look at the Ginzan Onsen and Tohoku Highlights Tour.

Getting to Zao Fox Village Without a Tour

You can reach the village on your own, but the bus days and the drive time decide whether it is worth it.

Bus and Car Options

A bus runs from JR Shiroishi Zao Station to the village. The village states that the Zao Sanroku loop bus runs every day except Wednesday from October. By car the village is about one hour's drive from Sendai. The Shinkansen covers Sendai to Shiroishi-Zao in about 13 minutes, then it is about 20 minutes by car.

Check your date against the Wednesday closure and the bus service days before you set out. The village's own access line also lists a limited-period Miyagi Zao Sanroku Access Line for 1 January to 29 March, so seasonal services change.

When the Tour Is the Better Fit

A solo visit to the foxes is workable. A fox village plus Ginzan Onsen day is not, unless you drive, because Ginzan needs Yamagata, Oishida and a bus, and a reserved shuttle from 19 December to 7 March. This tour handles both in 10 hours for $155 per person, with the fox admission of $9.54 (¥1,500) on top.

That is the trade: you give up control of the clock and gain a second stop.

Is Zao Fox Village Ethical and Safe?

The village lets foxes roam free in a garden and manages contact through strict visitor rules and health checks.

How Contact Is Managed

Visitors must not touch the foxes because they may bite. Feeding is allowed only in the designated feeding area. You must not sit or crouch at eye level with the foxes.

The village does not state an ethical policy beyond these rules, so weigh them yourself. Follow them and the visit is a walk-through observation, not a petting session.

Health Checks

The village says all its foxes are checked for Echinococcus, a parasite, before the spring baby-fox contact. The hug-a-baby-fox experience is available in spring only. Within your 1-hour stop on this tour, the practical advice is simple: keep a respectful distance, stay on the paths and keep children close.

FAQ

Is Zao Fox Village worth visiting?

If foxes are your reason for travelling, yes, with the caveat that this tour allots 1 hour. You walk designated areas among more than 100 foxes, and the village's own rules ask you not to touch them or crouch at eye level. For a longer stay, see the Fox Village and Ginzan Onsen with Hotel Pickup.

Is there a fox village near Sendai?

Yes. Zao Fox Village is in Shiroishi, Miyagi, about one hour's drive from Sendai. This tour reaches it by coach in a 1.5-hour outbound leg that also covers the shrine and Ginzan Onsen. See the full route.

What does the $155 price include?

The vehicle for the itinerary, fuel, tolls and motorway charges, and guide service. Meals, the fox admission of $9.54 (¥1,500) and the Ginzan shuttle fee if required are extra. The full breakdown is under what the price covers.

How long do we spend at Ginzan Onsen?

1.5 hours of self-guided time on the onsen street. That is enough for the riverside walk, the free Warashiyu foot bath and a browse in the shops. The Ginzan Onsen and Tohoku Highlights Tour adds lunch and the shuttle fee to the day.

Can the tour be cancelled?

Yes, in two ways. You can cancel free up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. The operator can also cancel or reschedule if fewer than 4 people book, again with a full refund. Details are on the booking card.

Is lunch included?

No. There is an optional 50-minute lunch break at a local restaurant in Shiroishi, at your own expense, featuring Shiroishi Umen noodles with about 400 years of history. Read more under the Shiroishi stop.

Does the fox village close on any day of the week?

Yes, Wednesdays, except in the May holiday period and Obon. Confirm your tour date against that rule, because the village itself sets the closure. Hours and fees are in the rules and hours section.
