What the Price Covers

At $222 per person the price covers the cruise, the entries, the tea and the lunch. The one exclusion is additional food and drinks.

Included, Excluded and Paid on Top

Included: pickup and drop-off from JR Matsushima Station or Sendai City hotels, the sightseeing cruise in Matsushima Bay, Godaido Temple, Kanrantei Tea House with matcha and sweets, Zuiganji and Entsuin, lunch with fresh oysters at Unashin Ishidaya, and the Fukuurabashi Bridge visit.

Excluded: additional food and drinks beyond the stated lunch. Bring cash for anything extra, since the listing lists cash under what to bring.

One contradiction to note plainly. The listing gives the cruise as 50 minutes in the description and 1 hour in the stop list. Ask the operator or confirm on the booking page which time applies before you plan around it.

Pros and Cons

An honest read of this listing next to the alternatives.

What we genuinely like

  • Everything is in the $222 price: cruise, all temple entries, matcha and the oyster lunch
  • Private car with hotel pickup in Sendai or Matsushima, in four languages
  • Stop durations are listed, which makes the 6.5-hour day easy to judge before booking
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and reserve now and pay later

The honest downsides

  • The listing is new with zero reviews, so there is no traveller feedback yet
  • The cruise is described as 50 minutes in one place and 1 hour in another
  • At $222 per person it costs more than the shared options, and no return time is stated
  • Children under 6 cannot join, and no wheelchair access is stated

Who it's NOT for: If reviews matter to you or you want the fish market, book the Matsushima Bay Day Tour with Boat Cruise instead.

Before You Go

Practical points for this tour, from the listing and official Matsushima sources.

Season, Winter and Money

The tour states no season and no winter changes, and oyster season runs late October to mid-March, which is when this lunch makes most sense. In winter, Fukuura Bridge is open only 8:30-16:30 from November to March, and Zuiganji closes at 3:30 pm in January and December, so the winter daylight is tight. Bring cash. The listing lists cash under what to bring, and the temple and tea house fees on your own are all small cash payments.

No lunch choice is needed since the oyster lunch is included, but extra food and drinks are not. Drones are not allowed.

Meeting Point, Footwear and Who Can Join

Pickup runs from hotels in Sendai, Matsushima or the surrounding local areas, at 8.30 AM for Sendai or 9.30 AM for Matsushima, and pickup time varies based on location, so be ready in your hotel lobby. Wear comfortable shoes for walking, the listing repeats this twice. Bring water.

Godaido is reached over an open-slat bridge and the day includes temple grounds and a bridge walk. Children under 6 cannot join. No wheelchair access is stated, so ask the operator before booking if that matters.

When Matsushima Oysters Are in Season

Oysters are the reason this tour exists, so timing matters.

The Season

Oyster season in Matsushima runs from late October to mid-March, and Miyagi ranks second to Hiroshima in oyster production. Matsushima oysters are at their peak between October and March. Book this tour inside that window and the lunch at Unashin Ishidaya lands on the best months.

In summer the local speciality shifts to anago, saltwater eel. The tour states no season, but the oyster lunch is the point and it is a winter meal. Travellers visiting outside the season should decide whether the temples and the cruise alone justify the price, or look at other Sendai day trips.

How the Tour Runs

The listing gives a pickup time for each start point and a duration for every stop, but no return time. All times below come straight from the listing.

Meeting Point and the Day, Stop by Stop

You are picked up at your hotel in Sendai, Matsushima or the surrounding local areas. Sendai pickups leave at 8.30 AM and Matsushima pickups at 9.30 AM. A 50-minute car transfer brings you to Matsushima Bay.

The day then runs through Godaido, the boat pier, Kanrantei, Zuiganji, Entsuin, lunch and the bridge walk, before a second 50-minute transfer back. No end time is stated, so confirm it with the operator when booking.

Date Masamune and the Samurai Temples of Matsushima

Matsushima was rebuilt in the Date family's image, and this tour visits the three buildings that show it.

Zuiganji, the Family Temple

Zuiganji was rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1609 over five years as the Date family temple. Its main hall, the Hondo, was designated a national treasure in 1953 and the Kuri living quarters in 1959. The gate opens at 8:30 am all year, with closing between 3:30 pm in winter and 5:00 pm from April to September.

Admission is $6.36 (¥1,000) for adults and $3.18 (¥500) for children, included in the tour price. You get 40 minutes here on this itinerary.

Godaido and Entsuin

Godaido, reached over an open-slat bridge, is Matsushima's oldest wooden structure. Its current building was rebuilt in 1604 by Date Masamune and is the oldest surviving Momoyama architecture in Tohoku. Entry is free and it closes at dusk. You get 30 minutes.

Entsuin was built in 1646 by Date Tadamune to mourn his son Mitsumune, who died at 19. The temple sits next to Zuiganji, opens 9:00-16:00 and charges $3.18 (¥500) for adults and $1.91 (¥300) for students. The listing highlights its moss and rock gardens. You get 40 minutes.

  • Godaido: free, closes at dusk, rebuilt 1604
  • Zuiganji: $6.36 (¥1,000) adult, national treasure main hall
  • Entsuin: $3.18 (¥500) adult, 9:00-16:00, built 1646

The Places on This Day Trip

Matsushima Bay holds about 260 small pine-covered islands and ranks as one of the Three Views of Japan. Here is what you do at each stop and what it would cost alone.

Godaido and the Bay Cruise

Godaido takes 30 minutes. You cross the sacred bridge, take in views over the bay and photograph the temple, which is free and closes at dusk. Then the sightseeing boat leaves from the Central Pier, 7 minutes on foot from JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station.

The regular round-the-bay course takes 50 minutes and costs $9.54 (¥1,500) for adults and $4.77 (¥750) for children. The tour's boat has a second deck and an English audio guide, and the listing times it at 1 hour in the itinerary.

Kanrantei, Zuiganji, Entsuin and Fukuurajima

At Kanrantei you get 30 minutes with matcha and Japanese sweets facing the bay. Entry alone is $1.91 (¥300) for adults and tea from $3.82 (¥600) costs extra, so the tour's included tea break covers both. Zuiganji gets 40 minutes, Entsuin 40 minutes, and lunch at Unashin Ishidaya 40 minutes.

The day closes with 30 minutes crossing the red Fukuurabashi Bridge, the "Bridge of Encounters", and walking Fukuurajima Island. The bridge crossing costs $1.91 (¥300) for adults and $0.64 (¥100) for students on your own, and is open 8:30-17:00 from April to October and 8:30-16:30 from November to March.

Doing It on Your Own by Train

Matsushima is easy by rail. The Senseki Line takes about 40 minutes from Sendai Station to Matsushima-Kaigan, or the Tohoku Main Line about 25 minutes to Matsushima Station plus a 20-minute walk to the centre. Paid entries on your own come to Zuiganji $6.36 (¥1,000), Entsuin $3.18 (¥500), Kanrantei $1.91 (¥300), Fukuura Bridge $1.91 (¥300) and the 50-minute bay cruise $9.54 (¥1,500) from the Central Pier, with Godaido free.

What the train does not give you is a guide, a car between the stops or a fixed oyster lunch. This tour adds a guide, handled entries and transport, and this one bundles the oyster meal into a private day. If you travel light, speak some Japanese and eat where you like, the train is cheaper and flexible. If you want the whole day arranged and explained in English, Russian or Ukrainian, this listing does that. It is a new listing with no reviews, so compare it with the Matsushima Private Guided Tour, which has 22 reviews but excludes lunch and entries, or the shared Matsushima Bay Day Tour with Boat Cruise, which includes all entry fees but not lunch. For a completely different day, see the guide to day trips from Sendai.

Matsushima Fish Market and Where Oysters Are Eaten

This tour eats its oysters at a restaurant, but Matsushima has a market option too.

The Market and Its Oyster House

Matsushima Fish Market is about a 10-minute walk from Matsushima-Kaigan Station and has an Oyster House with an all-you-can-eat grilled oyster option. It is a different experience from this tour's lunch, which is a 40-minute seated meal with fresh oysters at Unashin Ishidaya, included in the $222 price.

If grilling your own oysters matters to you, this listing does not visit the market. The shared Matsushima Bay Day Tour with Boat Cruise spends an hour at Matsushima Fish Market, where restaurants and food stands sit nearby, though its lunch is not included. That is the tour to pick if the market is the meal you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Matsushima oyster tour suitable in winter?

Yes. The tour states no season, and oyster season in Matsushima runs late October to mid-March, which is when the included lunch is at its best. Note the shorter winter hours at Fukuura Bridge and Zuiganji. See when oysters are in season.

Does the price include lunch and temple entries?

Yes. The $222 covers the bay cruise, Godaido, Kanrantei with matcha, Zuiganji, Entsuin, Fukuurabashi Bridge and lunch with fresh oysters. Only extra food and drinks are excluded. Details in what the price covers.

Where does the tour pick me up?

From your hotel in Sendai, Matsushima or the surrounding local areas, at 8.30 AM for Sendai or 9.30 AM for Matsushima, and pickup time varies based on location. See how the tour runs.

How long is the boat cruise?

The itinerary gives 1 hour, while the description says about 50 minutes. The regular bay cruise course takes 50 minutes, so confirm the exact time on the booking page. See the places on this day trip.

Can children join this private tour?

Children from 6 years up can join, the tour is not suitable for under 6. No wheelchair access is stated, so ask the operator if needed. Details in before you go.

Is it worth it compared with taking the train alone?

The train from Sendai to Matsushima-Kaigan takes about 40 minutes, and you pay each entry at the gate, so doing it alone costs less. The tour buys you a private guide, a car and the oyster lunch. Compare in doing it on your own by train.

What if I have no reviews to judge this tour by?

This listing is new, so read the alternatives. The Matsushima Private Guided Tour has 22 reviews and costs less but excludes lunch and entries. The day trips from Sendai guide compares them all.
